Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet Inc., described India’s technological transformation as “remarkable,” emphasizing the country’s rapid rise in artificial intelligence (AI), infrastructure development, and digital innovation.
India’s Rapid AI Transformation
Addressing global leaders and policymakers at the summit, Pichai expressed admiration for India’s pace of change. “Every time I visit India, I am struck by the pace of change, and today is no different,” he said, underscoring the scale of technological advancement reshaping the nation.
India’s emergence as a key AI innovation hub reflects sustained investments in digital infrastructure, startups, and public-private partnerships. With government-backed initiatives and increasing private capital flow, India is positioning itself as a major player in the global AI ecosystem.
Google’s $15 Billion Investment in India
One of the most significant announcements was Google’s commitment of $15 billion toward strengthening AI capabilities in India. A core component of this investment is the establishment of a full-stack AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a city that Pichai recalled visiting during his student days at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
Visakhapatnam, once known primarily as a coastal city, is now being positioned as a global AI and compute infrastructure hub. The project will include:
Large-scale compute infrastructure
Advanced AI research and development capabilities
A subsea cable gateway
Job creation and ecosystem expansion
This move aligns with India’s broader ambition to become a global AI powerhouse.
America-India Connect: Strengthening Digital Infrastructure
Pichai also announced the America-India Connect initiative, which includes the development of four new subsea fibre optic cable systems between the United States and India. These cables are designed to improve cross-border data transfer, cloud computing efficiency, and AI workloads.
By investing in subsea connectivity and compute infrastructure, Google aims to ensure that India remains at the forefront of next-generation digital transformation.
Avoiding the AI Divide
During his address, Pichai stressed the importance of preventing the digital divide from evolving into an AI divide.
“We cannot allow the digital divide to become an AI divide,” he said, emphasizing the need for:
Expanded compute access
Stronger connectivity
Workforce reskilling initiatives
Inclusive AI development
He acknowledged that AI will reshape the workforce by automating some roles while creating new career paths. Drawing a historical parallel, he noted that two decades ago, professional content creators on YouTube did not exist—today, millions work in the creator economy.
India AI Impact Summit 2026: Focus on People, Planet, and Progress
India is hosting the summit from February 16 to 20 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event is structured around three pillars—People, Planet, and Progress—highlighting sustainable and inclusive AI growth.
The summit reinforces India’s ambition to lead responsible AI innovation while ensuring economic growth and workforce transformation.
