Shelter Cafe : Bali's A Haven for Plant-Based Lovers

As a married couple, one of the most important aspects of our travels is having access to healthy and fresh living foods. Whether we’re hopping from one country to another, I conduct extensive research to find the best-reviewed and cleanest restaurants in each area we visit. Recently, I realized how much joy this brings me, transforming me from someone who never considered themselves a ‘foodie’ into an enthusiastic explorer of culinary delights. With Patrick just starting his journey into veganism, I’m thrilled to show him the incredible world of plant-based foods. After all, the saying “you are what you eat” inspires us to choose only the best.

Why Shelter Cafe Bali Stands Out

During our recent trip to Seminyak, Bali, we discovered Shelter Cafe (@shelterseminyak), which perfectly aligns with our desire for healthy dining options. I stumbled upon this gem on Instagram and was immediately captivated by their feed. After further research, I confirmed that the hype surrounding Shelter Cafe is entirely justified. They create all their own dipping sauces, almond/coconut/cashew milks, and desserts in-house. Plus, they cater to gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and vegan lifestyles. We couldn’t wait to experience it!

A Unique Atmosphere

Upon arriving, climbing the stairs felt like entering a beautiful treehouse crafted from bamboo, surrounded by lush greenery and hanging plants. The sounds of Bob Marley and The Mighty Diamonds playing in the background made us feel right at home.

Our Culinary Journey Begins

We started our meal with a refreshing elixir called Bright Eyes, a delicious blend of watermelon, mint, and lime. Next up were cauliflower fries served with a delightful basil lemon dressing. These perfectly breaded and fried cauliflower bites are a must-try!When we saw the waffle being served, our jaws dropped. Topped with mixed berries, mini Oreos, crushed almonds, and whipped blueberry coconut cream, you won’t believe this waffle is 100% plant-based. It’s sweet but not overwhelming—just perfect!Patrick's favorite dish was the Shades of Shelter platter, ideal for sharing. This generous platter included falafels, pita bread, fresh veggies, and an array of spreads. His top three dips were their homemade salsa, beetroot feta whip, and tahini. My personal favorite was the Soul Fuel Bowl. This nourishing dish was packed with quinoa, carrots, chickpeas, avocado, falafel, and more. Topped with three house-made dressings, this bowl is every vegan's dream and offers great value for a filling meal.

More Delicious Choices

Other notable items include the Veg-Ooo burger, topped with unique beetroot hummus and served with crunchy fries and house-made ketchup. The house-made spring rolls are incredibly fresh, filled with sprouts, carrots, and beets—an absolute must for spring roll lovers! Finally, we indulged in dessert—something I had been eagerly anticipating since before our arrival. The vegan Nutella milkshake was everything I hoped for and more! This dreamy concoction of homemade hazelnut butter, melted vegan dark chocolate, soaked oats, and dates exceeded my expectations. We also tried a slice of snickers cheesecake, dairy-free yet remarkably close to the original Snickers taste. The magic created in that kitchen truly impressed us.

Outstanding Service

Not only was the food divine, but the service was exceptional as well. Everyone at Shelter Cafe was incredibly kind and welcoming.A huge thank you to Sofia and Elisabeth for hosting us at @shelterseminyak!

Much love,Patrick & Kahala
