Zibiru: Where Italy Meets Bali

During our recent trip to Seminyak, one evening stands out above the rest: our unforgettable dining experience at Zibiru. This charming, open-air Italian restaurant offers a romantic escape from the bustling streets, creating the perfect setting for an exquisite meal. With a focus on regional Italian cuisine crafted from fresh ingredients, Zibiru harmonizes every aspect of fine dining.

Meet Chef Luigi Calcagno

We had the pleasure of meeting the owner and executive chef, Luigi Calcagno, who shared his journey and the story behind Zibiru. Originally from Luxembourg, Luigi's love for cooking began in his grandmother's kitchen, where he learned to make fresh pasta. While pursuing a degree in journalism, he traveled across Europe, working in various kitchens and nurturing his culinary passion. This eventually led him to Bali, where he envisioned creating an authentic Italian dining experience.

A Culinary Delight

Seated in a cozy, candlelit corner of the courtyard, we explored the menu, which catered perfectly to our pescatarian and vegetarian preferences. The wine selection was exceptional, rivaling the best we had enjoyed since leaving the United States. Patrick savored the lampuga in crusta di pane (pan-seared, bread-crusted mahi-mahi), while I delighted in the insalata di pomodoro and fusilli al pesto. For dessert, we indulged in sorbetta al limon, a homemade sorbet served in a lemon shell that burst with refreshing citrus flavor—an ideal conclusion to our meal on a warm evening.

The Story of Zibiru

Luigi's culinary journey took a significant turn when he moved to Bali a decade ago. His first home in Bali became the foundation for Zibiru in 2012. He meticulously remodeled the space, creating a beautiful dining atmosphere and a large kitchen capable of serving six restaurants. Each dish on the menu reflects Italy's diverse regions, featuring organic vegetables, fresh fish, pasture-raised meats, and signature homemade pasta.

Bottega Italiana: A Taste of Italy at Home

Next door to Zibiru is Bottega Italiana, Luigi's gourmet marketplace where you can take a piece of Zibiru home with you. This shop offers homemade pasta, sauces, cheeses, cured meats, olive oils, and more. You can also enjoy a relaxed dining experience featuring the same high-quality dishes found at Zibiru.

Events and Experiences

For those visiting Bali, Zibiru is a must-visit destination. With something for everyone, you might even catch a pasta-making workshop or enjoy an evening of live jazz if you time your visit right. For more information and updates, visit their website at www.zibiru.com.

Much love,Patrick & Kahala
