A lifelong Thespian

Judy Merrick’s life has been a testament to her passion for theater. After spending nearly 13 years in NYC, where she created and produced numerous plays and performances, Judy now dedicates her time to teaching improv to both adults and children. She also directs children’s musicals and plays and produces variety comedy shows with her writing partner, Rena Blair. Judy serves on the board of the Lyric Rose Theatre, which she considers her sanctuary—a place where she truly feels at home.

INspiration and INfluences

Judy draws inspiration from the historic Nevada Theater, the oldest continuously running theater west of the Mississippi, and the giants who have performed on its stage. She admires actors and actresses she has watched over the years and finds inspiration in local friends who challenge her. Her partner and writing and comedy collaborator, Rena Blair, are also significant sources of inspiration.

Advice for emerging artists

Judy encourages aspiring artists to immerse themselves in the world of theater. "See as many plays as possible, read plays regularly, and take improv classes," she advises. She emphasizes the importance of supporting live arts to foster growth and creativity.

Overcoming Challenges

One of Judy’s significant challenges is achieving fair compensation for her artistic work. While teaching has provided some relief, she acknowledges that making a living from art often relies on community support. "It takes a village to support art and ensure that people can earn a living from their hard work and talent," she notes. Balancing the creation of meaningful art with its appeal to a broader audience is another challenge she navigates.

Navigating Creative Blocks

To overcome creative blocks, Judy discusses her ideas with her partner and friends in the field. She finds inspiration by attending plays and supporting fellow artists. "Expressing emotions through storytelling helps shift perspectives, change minds and hearts, and fosters compassion and empathy," she explains.

Creative Process

Judy’s creative process is fueled by her love for storytelling and the transformative potential of theater. By engaging with her community, supporting other artists, and seeking new experiences and perspectives, she keeps her creative spirit vibrant and dynamic.
